Frequently asked questions
How does Mevo work in e-commerce?
The traditional way
Online stores need a trusted payment mechanism to ensure that you can’t cancel or reverse the payment once their goods have been delivered to you.The generally accepted payment method for this type of transaction is a credit card. Most online stores now add 3D secure to credit card transactions – which requires you to enter your card details on the website of the online store and further confirm the transaction through your mobile banking app.
Pros: The online store is guaranteed to receive payment upon conclusion of the transaction and 3D secure reduces fraudulent use of stolen credit cards to some degree.
Cons: You are expected to provide a lot of sensitive credit card information to a third party with little guarantee that the information won’t be abused. Especially if it’s a new or unknown online store. 3D secure does not protect you from potential abuse because you are always expected to disclose your Credit card number, Expiry date and CVV.
The Mevo way
Mevo is directly connected to the credit card companies, VISA and Mastercard, and online stores connect directly to Mevo. When you complete a transaction through an online store and choose Mevo as the payment option, the only payment information you need to provide is your mobile number and the transaction is processed as follows:
- In the background, the online store will connect to Mevo and provide the transaction reference, the amount and your mobile number.
- Mevo will send a payment request to your mobile number via SMS or Whatsapp and the request will contain a link which you click.
- If it’s your first time using Mevo, you will be prompted to download the Mevo app. If you’ve used Mevo before, the payment link will automatically open the Mevo app on your mobile phone.
- The Mevo app will list the payment request and you will then simply tap your credit card on the back of YOUR phone and enter your PIN on YOUR phone.
- Mevo encrypts this information on YOUR phone and sends it to VISA or Mastercard for authorization.
- Mevo sends a success or failure response directly to the online store and the transaction is complete.
In your Mevo app you have a detailed list of all past transaction requests and their status.
How does Mevo work with subscriptions and debit orders?
The traditional way
- Debit orders/direct debits: The general practice in many countries for paying recurring bills such as rental, mortgage payments, vehicle payments, insurance, gym membership, municipal utilities, mobile phone contracts, internet services, etc. is for you to provide your banking details and a signed authorization to the company providing the service, who in turn, through large collections agencies, will automatically deduct the amounts due from your local bank account. This process only works for localised (in country) transactions.
- Credit card subscriptions: With the advent of more and more services being initiated online and across borders, there has been a shift towards using cards for collecting recurring bills and subscriptions – Think Google, Netflix, Apple, etc.
Pros: Convenience of knowing essential bills will be paid automatically, provided your cashflow can support it.
Cons: You have no control and visibility, ahead of time, over which debit orders will be charged to your account.
Since debit orders are initiated from multiple sources, there’s no single list of these with your bank. When a debit order is submitted to your bank, they take it in good faith that you’ve agreed to the payment, and they will process it. Your bank will reverse a rogue or erroneous debit order should you request it, but it’s a process and your bank will charge a fee for the reversal.
If a rogue or erroneous debit order impacts your cashflow to the point where other debit orders are returned, it’s an even bigger and more costly process to rectify.
There has been a substantial increase in rogue companies fraudulently submitting debit orders to many accounts for small amounts resulting in customers just ignoring the transactions because the effort is too great to question and reverse the transaction. And if it is a rogue debit order, even if you manage to reverse it, there is no way of ensuring that another rogue debit order is not submitted again.
The Mevo way
Mevo allows you to control recurring payments and subscription billing through your debit or credit card and the Mevo app. You are positioned squarely in the flow of all billing request to your account.
You will approve every new subscription request presented through Mevo by tapping your card on the back of YOUR phone and entering your PIN on YOUR phone.
Thereafter, you can elect to have known and trusted subscriptions processed regularly without your intervention and to authorize others each time they are submitted.
Do I have to use my card and PIN each time I want to approve a transaction?
Every once-off payment will require you to tap your card on your phone and authorise with your PIN – that’s exactly what makes Mevo special and protects you.
For repeat transactions, like debit orders and subscriptions, you will need to authorise the first transaction by tapping your card on your phone, but then you can choose to save the authorization for that subscription and allow that subscription to approve automatically. You can of course revoke the authorization at any time – which is a key benefit of using Mevo.
Will Mevo work if I’m out of data?
Mevo is a global payments app and in some countries it will operate on a data-free model and in others countries it will require data to operate
What happens to Mevo if my mobile phone is lost or stolen?
Mevo is linked to your mobile number and is password protected like any mobile banking app. If your phone is lost or stolen, as long as you replace your SIM card and keep the same mobile number, you simply reinstall the Mevo app and continue using it.
Does Mevo support Virtual Cards?
You won’t be able to use a virtual card to authorise payments through Mevo because the very essence of the Mevo app is that it uses the NFC and PIN of your physical credit card to allow you to make secure transactions.
However, we will shortly introduce the ability for you to generate virtual cards on the Mevopay app.
Is Mevo a bank?
No, Mevo is not a bank account and does not aim to replace your bank account. Mevo gives you more control over money flowing out of your bank account or wallet and requires you to have a valid physical credit or debit card to use Mevo.
Mevo was designed to utilise existing banking and card processing infrastructure to provide you with a better and more secure customer experience and give you more control.
